5 Ways to Celebrate Pride in Newmarket

Celebrating Pride Month comes with a bit more than pulling out your best rainbow attire! It’s a time to show support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community, to rally together, and to celebrate people as they are. Creating a safe and welcoming space for all people year-round is important, but we love how especially colourful those efforts become come Pride Month! Check out some things you can do this year to show your #Pride in Newmarket!

Eat With Your Heart

Digging into delicious treats has never been more satisfying! Goodman’s Fine Foods is bringing Pride to our tastebuds with sugar cookies that are both a delight to eat and admire! These gorgeous rainbows also support a great cause, with $1 of every sale going towards Pflag York Region, a local LGBTQ2 support, education, and resources network.

Newmarket Pride Parade

Make Some Noise

Newmarket goes all out for Pride, which is why this year’s Pride Festival is now a two-day event! Run by York Pride, the party starts Friday, June 16th with concerts from 6 pm-midnight, followed by the York Pride Parade on Saturday, June 17th. 2,500 participants and more than 50 floats will take over Newmarket’s historic Main Street during one of the biggest street parties of the year. Wear Your Support

Looking for something to wear during the Parade? Good Vibes on Main has you covered! Their Pride collection (in store and online) has adorable t-shirts to help you rep your support. You’ll also find Pride flags in the store. $5 from each shirt and 50% of the sale of flags will go to York Pride to help support their programs for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.

Read Up

Whether you’re an ally, a part of the community, or someone just starting the journey to learning more, there are resources to explore. The Newmarket Library has compiled a treasure trove of stories for anyone to borrow during the month of June. “We have information and stories featuring diverse voices from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,” says Tracy Munusami, CEO of the Newmarket Library. “Check out an audiobook, ebook or even a physical library book to learn more.” While you’re there, don’t miss signing the Library’s Pride Wall which features positive messages of love, support and acceptance in honour of Pride Month.
